Next week could be coldest in at least a decade

The cold air mass pushing into the Carolinas on Thursday night and early Friday will produce some bitter conditions, but it might be just a prelude for an even bigger event early next week.

Computer models insist that a very strong arctic air mass will push into the eastern United States, probably covering the nation -- from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico -- in very cold air.

How cold?

Some of the computer models are shooting out some almost unbelievable numbers. Suffice it to say that we could see high temperatures only in the upper 20s next Tuesday or Wednesday in Charlotte. And that will be despite full sunshine.

Morning lows in single digits are certainly possible in parts of the area, with Wednesday morning looking like the prime candidate for coldest temperatures. In the mountains, we could be looking at daytime highs of 10 to 15 degrees and overnight lows a bit below zero.

This looks to be a dry air mass, however. The only exception to that will be in the northwest mountains, where a flow of unstable air from the northwest will produce a couple inches of snow, probably sometime around Monday night or Tuesday.

In the Piedmont, we're looking at clear conditions.

Once again, however, this looks to be a relatively brief shot of cold air. It will last Tuesday and Wednesday, with warming conditions arriving by Thursday. By Thursday, the center of high pressure will be over the Atlantic, which will put the Carolinas on the back side of the system, receiving a southwest flow. That could allow Gulf of Mexico moisture to stream into the area, and if surface temperatures are still cold enough, we could see a bit of freezing rain early Thursday.

After that, a period of milder weather appears likely into the middle of January.

Try this simple thought:

Weather does not equal climate

Get it right!

Cold = warming.
Warm = warming.
Hot = warming.
Flood = warming.
Drought = warming.
Warming = regulations, tax hikes, more regulations, protests, more regulations, larger beaches, more sun for tanning, and more regulations, and eventually doomsday.

Stop thinking correctly! It is without a doubt or debate warming! Now sit down and think as you are told to!!

Well put!!!

How has the climate changed? Are we supposed to be getting 80 degree weather here in NC in January, as if this is now Florida? Is cold weather in January now a strange thing because the climate has changed? Please explain.

Brad Panovich needs to weigh in and set the record straight.

Last year it was 75+ degrees a couple days in January...so over the past year the climate has indeed changed. Duke Power is going to rack up the $$$ next week!

Wow:

All this "new" comment stuff on the Observer website was going to "up" the level of comments.

It's working REALLY well for you all so far. Glad I didn't waste the money on the subscription.

Yes, weather over time does equal climate, but weather is short term, climate is long term as you admit when you say "weather over time is climate". However, the previous posters made no such assertions but were looking at a single weather event and saying "What happened to global warming" which is silly. Using that logic I could use any unusual warm weather during winter and claim "global warming" but that wouldn't be right either.

Can you use an unusually cool summer (as we had in 2013) and claim global cooling?

The depth of ignorance in many these posts explains why all of them chose to remain anonymous. 97% of climate experts agree the climate is warming at an abnormally faster rate than ever before. The deniers have no reliable data to back up their counter claims, so they resort to making it a political issue.

For the fox news tin hat wearing crowd, let's ask the people of the Philippines about global warming.

Whether or not the earth's climate is changing because of Al Gore's carbon footprint (I do not believe it so) I do like the new freedom to leave notes at the end of stories. I believe this change (albeit little) can have a statutory impact on your "hits" in the way a strong classified section does.

I used to be on the "Global Warming" bandwagon…In hindsight, I think it made me feel "smart". I got to say things like "Oh, you simpletons, don't you know that "weather" doesn't equal "Climate"" and other such statements, showing how simple minded "deniers" were and how "intellectual" I was.

But as time has gone on, I realize the whole "climate change" and "Global warming" debate was about power and control and more importantly, about Money!

Anyhow…VAST amounts of scientists, including many form "Warmers" are now saying that these cycles are normal, and are caused by the sun's cycles. No real money to be made by such findings really…we just exist with the cycles.

Some just can't leave politics out of it i guess, so many of my friends on the left, still cling to "hope" that WE are somehow causing changes in Climate. I really feel sorry for those people…they seem to be totally blinded and seem to follow this as their religion. God Bless them

A while back a friend and I were discussing how everything we see online that allows comments eventually attracts either people who are looking for a fight or just wanting to unload their spleens in petty ways. These comments are the spleen cleaning type. If you folks find this blog offensive, why read it? I'm giving up reading comments (here, at least) for my own peace of mind. It's an article about the weather and does not mention global warming.

The most "ignorant" leave posts under the name "Bill." "Bill" has no reliable data to back up his claims, nor does the CNN dunce cap- wearing guy at January 3, 2014 at 7:24 AM whose authority rests with "people in the Philippines."

Remember back in the 70's when the big "scientific" claim was that the earth was getting colder, and that an ice age was coming? Science is politics.

If the climate does get warmer, that is a GOOD THING! Who wants it colder, ever?

Buster Brown said...

Talk to the people in the Philippines? You should go ask the fools currently stuck in the ice of Antarctica, who are there to prove "global warming" has melted away the ice.

@Bill, i like the "97%" touch. Almost makes it sound like a real stat instead of something you pulled out of an orifice.

Brad, look up Asimov+1977+warming on youtube. He posted a commentary re global warming due to CO2. It was something he was saying all the way back to the 50's. Very few, if any, were predicting cooling then. Yes, Time Magazine came out with a speculative piece, but that was it.

For those who keep trying to disassociate climate from weather...what is climate if not an accumulation of weather

Anonymous said...

Climate is based on averages - and over the last 30 years the average temperature in the Southeast US has cooled slightly. I think what set off the alarm for global warming believers is the rate the Earth warmed on average in the last couple decades. What often wrecks the global warming believers position is events in recent earth history such as the "Little Ice Age" and the Midevil Warm Period" - Google those and then ask yourself why the "Alarmists" don't reference those events? I do think we need to take better care of the environment and we need to clean the air and water - and I guess for some the ends justifies the means....

I love how lefties say conservatives can't "prove" global warming is fake. Yet, because of the lack of significant warming evidence, the "global warming" experts had to start calling it "climate change" because people were realizing that we weren't going to burn up and coastal cities weren't going to be under water due to melting of polar ice caps

Is NASA too liberal to consider as a source? Last time I checked, they seemed pretty conservative....you know getting us to the moon and all before the ruskies, etc. Why, shoot, most of them fellers even went to college. Go to to NASA+climate+charts to see for yourself whether you believe Earth is cooling off. Read some of the in depth commentary about the relationship between CO2 and temperatures. Pretty interesting stuff (and you can do it on the sly so none of your conservative friends will notice)

We wont worry Mr. Blasphemer. We will be taken care of, and so will you.

Internet blogs have unfortunately provided a pulpit for even the most vicious of the underclass.

"Last time I checked... "

So when was the last time you checked? Did you check, or are you habitually typing an overused cliche to preface your opinion? If so, here are a few others in that category you can also use to begin a paragraph:

"Wow."
"Really?"
"Seriously?"
"Yes."

It is cold outside today, so wear a coat. All your stats cannot change that one iota.
