I won't even beat around the bush on this one. Some of the computer models are predicting the development of a big East Coast storm next week that could bring snow to parts of North Carolina.
If you believe a few of the models, snowflakes could even be falling in the Charlotte region next Wednesday.
It's crazy early for such a thing to happen, but some of the models show enough arctic air being dragged into the back side of the system for snow to fall in parts of North Carolina.
The National Weather Service meteorologists at the Greer office think it will be the cold-chasing-precipitation scenario. That is often the case in the Charlotte region, as it was several time in the last few years. Precipitation falls as rain and ends before the really cold air arrives.
So that's the official forecast -- rain, followed by some very chilly air around Wednesday or Thursday of next week.
But the Weather Service thinks rain could mix with or change to snow along and north of the I-40 corridor. And the mountains seem destined for snow.
The European model is most bullish on some snow falling in the Carolinas. The Global model has a more tame solution.
Either way, it looks as if an arctic high pressure system is expected to move into the central United States early next week and then spread eastward. That will bring very cold weather into areas north of the Carolinas. If the low pressure trough over the East is strong and digs deep into the Southeast, then some of that arctic air will filter down this way.
Like I said ... mid-November is mighty early to be thinking about a winter storm. But if a strong low pressure system really develops, inland areas of the Mid-Atlantic apparently are in for something that might seem more fitting for December or January.
We'll keep an eye on this in coming days.

Calling him an idiot is pathetic. Steve's blogs are informative based on information from meteorologists. He's not attempting to "bs." He's blogging about potential weather here. That's it.

I have no problem with snow, or winter weather but I have found Steve's blogs less than accurate-- other than a fun read that's about it-- bring on the cold air- cleans out the pollen and makes the sky wonderfully blue - beats that summer haze
Nov 11-12, 1968, Several inches of snow fell from Charlotte north into the foothills and mountains. It can happen.
There just aint no forgetting.
I remember an inch of snow pre-Thanksgiving 2000 in Charlotte. It melted quickly, but it's happened before.
I know in my little hometown it snowed on halloween 1 year between 07-10. Im thinking 08 tho. I just know i was in astronomy so thats why im guessing 08. Could be 09.
Little early for snow but the chilly air is more than welcome. Anything that makes Brad "When is it gonna warm up around here? Only 82 today!" Panovich gets my vote.

Check the official National Weather Service forecast for next week. No snow. No unusual cold snap. Lyttle is even more of a hyper than Panovich, Thomas, and Udelson.
Brad Panic is already calling for bread and milk runs, and schools are planning to close all week. There is also a possibility Charlotte will be declared a disaster area to obtain more federal handouts.

Duh, did you even read what he said. He specifically quoted the NWS forecast that says no snow! But he just pointed out that other models point to other possibilities, that's all. You need get off your high horse. You're the "hyper" in this case.

I also remember snow the week before Thanksgiving in 2000 (around the 22nd?). It was only about an inch or so, but I remember it being really early for snow around here.
Here are the predictions:
We will have snow.
We will have no snow.
It will be cold.
It will be warm.
It may rain.
See, whatever happens, the all-wise and all-knowing weathermen, who are here to take care of us, will be, of course, correct.
